The Franciscan St. Francis Heart Valve Center provides comprehensive medical and surgical treatment options for heart valve disease — all in a caring environment designed to deliver the most advanced cardiovascular care. Our experienced physicians have focused their careers on the diagnosis and treatment of heart valve disease and can offer patients with complex heart conditions new hope that is not available at most hospitals.

The St. Francis Heart Valve Center combines state-of-the-art technology with an experienced team of valve specialists, who collaborate to create a specialized care plan that is unique to the individual. The goal is to avoid heart damage that can otherwise go undetected and to restore normal valve function whenever possible.

When heart valve disease is first diagnosed, medications may be used to diminish the impact on the heart. For many, the valve condition will never progress beyond this. Others will need to be evaluated for surgical treatment to avoid permanent damage. Your physician will work with you to determine the treatment that best meets your individual needs.

The surgeons at the St. Francis Heart Valve Center advocate valve repair over valve replacements whenever possible. Valve repair surgery preserves the patient’s own heart valve so blood-thinning medications are not required.

Clear advantages of mitral valve repair versus replacement include:

  • Lower at the time of operation.
  • Significantly lower long-term risk of stroke and infection.
  • Improved long-term survival.
  • After mitral valve repair, blood thinners are not required, in contrast to the life-long requirement for blood thinners after mechanical mitral valve replacement.
